Wow, that's quite the lengthy article isn't it? I'll have to get back to you later :p
Phew! Having read it it's pretty decent article. It seems like a lecture on game theory and things to consider if you're designing a game. I can see how it applies to LSN, specifically the part about FPSes and weapon damage. The randomness of the weapons in a game of LSN can make or break a game for you, but it does add a level of enjoyment when things go your way, or disappointment over a faulty grenade. But again as argued it does make it more of a simulation of real war, sometimes grenades would bounce funny, shots fly wide, bullets bounce off armour, it all adds to the flavour. Overall it makes the game more interesting (for me at least), as the outcome isn't always guaranteed. You still get that rush when your commie runs into another and you manage to one shot him, while you remain alive to fight on.

Indeed. LSN is so awesome in how the level the randomness is balanced in the gameplay. You usually try to minimize your risks, use the opportunities and
manipulate what randomness brings you.
Except the spawn biting creatures. Reading the article made me think that the current scheme - if you're standing right near your target you get a guaranteed bite, and if not you're guaranteed to have to move closer - is really messed up. The chance element here is not present as it should be, from the game design point of view. Pretty cool article. To me the most salient point is the "regression to the mean" concept: it explains why online risk is so addictive--there are so
many dice rolls that good strategy clearly wins out over time. It also explains why I am terrible at poker....
In LSN and other games the strategy is in accounting for the possible effects of randomness whan making your moves. . . and I think the mark of a great game is that some players are consistently much better or much worse than the average. |

And still in LSN just as in poker, sometimes in singular games luck can determine awfully lot. Having that commie trying to pop that hole in that dang on that
wall for two turns strainght resultless, or one's sniper getting one-shot kills each and every time while other player's sniper barely scraching the
opponent's units. Still in general from a dozen on games the better tactician should win far more of those games, even if luck might tilt the favour to the
weaker player in a couple of those.
LSN: Mr Cartier League:High Elite GMT:+2 - A knight is sworn
to valor. His heart knows only virtue. His blade defends the helpless. His might upholds the weak. His word speaks only truth. His wrath undoes the
wicked.

I can't believe he didn't mention Axis & Allies, an example of the perfect combination of strategy and randomness.
As an aside, I own the B-17 game he mentioned. It was my dad's, and I remember playing it in elementary school, having convinced the teacher that it was educational. lol ![]() Top Albums of last Week ![]() |

I'm going to have to fire up ADOM again now....
I own a copy of Luftshiff, a WWI zeppelin simulation and while it sounds a lot like B-17 you do have many decisions to make in the management of your craft. Here's a review: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/118558 |
