the US version money gives u advantages on premium ships etc which u could keep so no one had the free ships in game. the eu version has a time limit on them so only the money wasters have them making them rarely seen, they dont make much difference anyway tbh.
as for the ships u start with and FF then progress to a DD all the way to BB or CV. as u progress and your sailors get better u upgrade your guns etc.

as for do the smaller ships have a roll to play. u bet they do! depending wot game type u play. i have been playing blitzkrieg games lately which is limited to lvl 60 max so the max ship type u go against is CA's but mostly DD's an CL's. its great fun going against a CL who thinks he can blast u out the water goes broadside to u so he can High arc shells, u speed in. he thinks oh its only a DD and u open up with 5 duel 6" guns and a salvo of torps. as u zig zag away watching his hulking wreck sink

the other mode is Great battle which has CV's and BB's so the smaller ships are needed for escort duty and AA. also subs are coming into the game in the future which i like the sound of.
give it a try indri u will be suprised, i know your over the big pond but i suggest the EU version as its newer.
ps u dont need to buy things for cash, the game has a proper trade zone to swap sailors ships etc for credits u earn in game. i got plenty of sailors to give u a little boost if needed. i only played a few times its one of those u can throw a few battles in then do something else.
