Due to the resounding bemusement that met it, I figured the best thing is to just have a crack at it and see how it goes. All constructive criticism and suggestions for tweaks and improvements welcomed!
So, to Match 1! The self-declared holder of the Gambling School Belt, MrE, is to take on the challenge of Gobbo. The first step is for the holder to choose the game parameters, so I'm going to choose the following game: Marines, 30fp, Wipeout, 30 turns, 5 days (I think all games should be 5 dayers but we can see how that pans out) Given the release of all them new maps I think I'll pick Casa Regnix, just because I like the name
Next step is for the bookie to issue a spread. As I'm currently the bookie as well(!), I'm going to give it like this: I've been playing this since it was released although not a prolific player of league games, so am a bit of an old hand nestling pretty comfortably in mid-Elite obscurity. El Gobbo has been around the block a bit too, not sure where he is league wise but I know he's not in Elite, and he's got a ton of games under his belt so I'd say he looks like there's a bit more enthusiasm than killer instinct going on there! SO, given all that and the fact it's a Marine game on an unknown map I'm going to give a spread of
18-20 Holder
9-12 Challenger
Which translates to: I think it's not going to go the full distance but I'm going to win with roughly twice the points that Gobbo's going to score.
[EDIT - copied this explanation up from lowerdown post]
There are 4 bets you can make:
buy holder
sell holder
buy challenger
sell challenger
to 'buy' a player means you think they're going to score more points than the top end of the spread offered by the bookie for that player. Selling means you think they'll score less than the lower end of the spread. You have to put an amount - in whole pounds making a total of 10 - on each bet you want to make, and your return is that amount for each point you successfully bought or sold. You can spread your tenner across all 4 bet types if you like or stack it all on one. Obviously you should put more money on what you think is more likely to happen.
So for instance if I score 30 points and Hero Boy has bet all 10 quid on buying the holder, he would win 100.
You've all got 10 to spend how you like buying/selling the challenger and/or the holder, the person with the most succesfull bet gets to challenge the holder of the belt. I think we'll give it a few days for people to make their bets, then we'll kick the game off and put a commentary on here of how the score's progressing
