The future of LSN

Hi everyone,I am considering the following course of action for LSN
1. Making the game free to play
2. Website/forum and other administration to be run by volunteers from the playing community.

This means that I must find a cheaper server solution, which I will start investigating straight away.

In the meanwhile, I will be suspending new subscriptions and re-subscriptions. This is because we need to close down the bank account and partnership to avoid future accountancy costs.

If any player has an account which expires, then I will extend the subscription. Please contact the support email directly, or my forum mailbox - supply your user name.

Let me know what you think.

Hi Julian

That sounds like a great idea. I'd be very willing to help.

List of players who would help run it

It's a great news!!!
Will you share a server binaries/sources? (this could lower server hardware requirements due to everyone could start he's own server)
I will help if I can. For example, I can start a russian game forum (and/or even championship).

I think you will find the answer to this is a definate no. It's part of what keeps the game good is that there is a single server.
Good news, might give the game a bit more life, I know I might come back for the odd game every so often.
However, I guess it spells the end of any hope for future development.  As good as the game is, there are still bugs, things that could be added without destroying the game. new tile sets, ultra short game turns to fill that I want it now junkie mentality of the younger generation.
Any word on a sequal or similar new project?
Have you considered a cash shop approach?  I know many hate them, mostly due to the "if I don't pay I can't compete" aspect that many early implementations had, but if done right it can work.  What if marines are free to play, and each other race costs a small one off price,  most will agree the races are well balanced, and there are some great players who only ever played marines.

One issue free to play brings is how will it impact the community?  The thing that kept LSN alive as long as it has is the community, barring the recent spam, look at the forums.   have you ever seen a question answered with "Use the search function you noob" or similar, even if the question is the same as the last post, people will still answer the question or link to the old post without resort to retarded comments.  I don't recall a flame war, or any other such rubbish ever happening.    Will the "opening up" of LSN impact the community?  without the community, LSN would probably have died years ago.

I agree on the need for a single server, absolutely. I think we need all our players in one place.

I think Brootal you are being a little negative - there may be some exciting ideas that a player-based admin can come up with, even if it is short of new tile sets. Image

As said above, the news is both exciting as well as sad in a way. But truly I think we all knew that further development wasn't going to happen bar a miracle of resurgence. Anything which could act to increase the playerbase or bring back oldies is welcome in my book. I have just so many good memories tied into this game and its community.

I, too, would be willing to help.

I'd definitely play again if it were free to play- the reason I don't play at the moment is I'd feel under pressure to play a game if I was paying for it, and I don't need the pressure! Eve and BF:BC2 occupies me enough.
I'd do my bit to promote this game if it were free (easier to get a cynical world to try it), and sure the community won't be as close as it was but isn't it better there are more players and the games lives, than not?
re. micropayments or cash shop- I feel this is a bad idea. I get really put off games that are like that. Either have a flat charge for everyone (like LSN currently is) or no charge at all.
Incidentally, @Brootal, not only do you play Eve, you're in Ushra'Khan? I was in U'K for over a year, left recently Image
Nice to hear from you again Julian, sorry LSN didn't turn out to be what you hoped it'd be.

I think it's good that  it could be free.  I just resubbed before the weekend, and did think twice though... but decided there are still enough people to make it fun Image
Hopefully free == more people will sign up (but without the commitment of money spent, will they stay?   I'd hate for an influx of people all to stop games halfway through, grrr).
Anyway, of course, happy to help if I can.
Also just like to say thank you for the game.  Looked at a few alternatives since it went a bit quiet here, but nothing that really cut the mustard for me.  Cheers! Image
