Has LSN stalled? |
Lead | ||
|
I can't remember where I read it, but I heard that LSN hasn't changed in like 18 months. Is this true?
I don't need intelligence drugs, Tom. Because I don't know what they are. Okay, Tom?
But I will put anything in my mouth that's given to me. Whether it's supposed to go there or not. Because I'm different. |

It's pretty cheeky charging monthly for a game that has no real development.

I pay yearly....... for the server to continue processing the games. Paying monthly would make it rather expensive.

Me too, subscribe by the year as my processing fee.

Yeah, it's a very reasonable fee to pay for continued access to the best game in the world, I think.

Of course you're right Ian, I love this game. It's just the way I play it doesn't suit the payment method. I get the urge to play a game of LSN
every now and again, not enough to justify a subscription. I'd happily pay a flat rate of, say, £20 on top of what I've already paid for this game to
get it for life, but having to pay £3.50 every time I come back to play the one game sucks (doesn't mean I won't do it though, but not before a lot of
inner turmoil over the woes of my wallet).
EDIT: Even better idea actually; a pay as you go system. Instead of paying £3.50 for a month, you get say 200 turns or something. That'd work way better for me.

Believe me, we've suggested it lol!! In fact not so long ago it looked like that was likely to become a reality, but then JG disappeared again

Really? Huh. I've sent an e-mail to the LSN support about it because I'd be very interested in seeing that become a reality.

I seem to remember someone (axe perhaps) came up with some problems with the idea, and no-one thought of ways round them. I can't remember the details,
though, it was something not immediately obvious.

I had a thorough search of the forums and found it:
If you`re going to have a pay as you go scheme, I think it would make more sense to pay per game then per turn. If a game times out, the player who times out should be charged 2 game credits and the player who gets all his turns in should get the game free. If a player concedes or loses very early he would be charged a game credit but his opponent should not be. With "pay per turn" a subscriber could run away for 20 turns in a game he has definately lost, forcing the pay per turn player to use up turn credits doing nothing. It kind of puts pressure on the pay per turn players to finish things quickly and I don`t think this is a good thing. A counter-argument was: I've already gotten cheesed off cause my league opponents (who are losing) haven't sent me turns in more than a week. That "costs" me as much as the scenario you describe, considering that my current subscription is time-limited. If they time out, it's not as much of a loss, but if they send the turn on the 13th day... I don't think that the scenario described by axe is much of an issue compared to the inability of the current payment system to draw back infrequent players like myself. Looks like LSN needs as many players as it can get at the moment.

It's a good point. Considering LSN's need for players, maybe a radical pricing rethink is needed. Maybe something along the lines of making it free to
play but with non-performance enhancing extras to be paid for. After all, there are no development costs to be met, how expensive can Bulgarian server costs
be? A largely free LSN would instantly result in a load of new players. The alternative seems to be no LSN at all in 18 months time.

I agree. (Although I think the server still resides in the UK)
The number of players is just slowly and constantly dropping now. I don't think it's long before there's going to be only 1 page of Elite players. Maybe some stats from Fuzzy might be able to prove otherwise...? |

A largely free LSN gives almost no incentive for it to be developed. And once it is free nobody will ever pay for it again.
HB, I think you are making a mistake in equating elite league activity with number of players. The numbers are falling but I believe there are also more just not playing in the league. |

The numbers are falling but I believe there are also more just not playing in the league.I agree totally that the number of players in Elite is not a totally accurate representation of the number of players. What I do think is that in the absence of stats like the ones generated by Fuzzy, it's the best indicator we've got. And on that note, it would be interesting to see the latest Fuzzy stats... |

Fuzzy has posted (in the MPLSN threads) to say that babytime is taking up a lot of his RL ATM. But on that note I'd love to see the stats too.

A largely free LSN gives almost no incentive for it to be developed. And once it is free nobody will ever pay for it again.I agree, at least mainly. It seems clear though that there won't be any substantial development soon though. That being the case, Codo seem to have the option of coming back to find a reasonably sized community of enthusiasts who aren't used to paying for most content or a tiny community who are. And regarding stats, it seems reasonable to assume that with league player numbers declining, player run competition numbers declining and forum activity declining that it's unlikely to be just because the LSN demographic is changing to an unsociable group of players who just play friendlies. And why wouldn't numbers decline? LSN has a low profile, there's no new content and there surely can't be too many people in the target audience who haven't already heard of it, tried it and either moved on or been put off by having to pay a subscription. If nothing is done, the player numbers will drop even more until all that's left is a tiny hardcore (of which I'll probably be one), and if nothing's done on development the only option left is to do something about the pricing. Cheers, Zwack |

As you can see, the annual boost on usage around these times haven't come this year, wich is quite sad. I really do love this game. |

General Strike, there's no development now so I don't think there's anything to be feared from the pricing being reviewed. I should point out I
decided not to renew even though I really wanted to play a quick game, and I don't doubt for a second that I'm not the only potential player that could
be recruited if the game was pay-as-you-go/free/one-time payment only. I e-mailed support and after a week there's still no word back, does anyone know how
else I could chase this up?

Looking at the graphs it is clear there is a slow decline. I think the spike last February and March was due to the special offer of a years subscription for
less than usual. Which either points to the current price being an issue, or that people are often tempted to spend extra money by special offers.
