Posts: 107 28-Jan-06 07:07	Tags : None I just bought the game two weeks ago, so I'm working through all the races and units. As a noob, I just can't get my mind around the Greys. Is there a strategy guide for them? In particular, I don't see how the Greys defend against an opponent who keeps moving and wants a close-up fight, like the Spawn. The Greys will obviously do well against someone who is playing a long-range game, or hide-and-seek. But I don't see how they can survive an in-your-face attack. Please explain.

Posts: 1407 28-Jan-06 08:23	All the factions have their weak spots. Greys are probably at their weakest facing aggressive, Drone-heavy Spawn. Still, with the right map, and enough Psykers, they can probably prevail -- if you know your opponent is charging you down, you know where to Psyke. On the other hand, I've been playing a couple of years now, and I still can't really get my head round Greys either. So I probably shouldn't have answered this at all.

Spawn eat Greys for a snack. Greys eat Marines for diner... And Marines eat Machina for lunch. While it is a big advantage/disavantage when you know what your opponent will deploy as a race, like in the Specialist League (you can find a link in my sig), the idea rest in the fact that if you play a league game then you will never really know which race your opponent will deploy. This sometime lead to great deployment chances, as you might wish to deploy a race which is best against the one you think your opponent will be most likely to deploy. Greys are just too inaccurate to hit a non large target at long range. The Pysker has a small range and a warp's strength drops off quite quickly. Greys are very tough whilst their shields are up and they can also regenerate quickly. However the shields don't usually last that long. If you can use hit and run tactics (like you suggested), take out a few FP, run away to regenerate and then attack again once at full strength. You will slowly wear your opponent down (and probably annoy him to bits as well) And against Spawn, you're probably not taking enough Sentries. 6 is usually a minimum for 20FP. I advise more. The Greys units are quite expensive so that means that you can't afoord 1 type of each unit. At least 1 Guardian and 1 Pysker is a must so that means you must make a choice between a Warper and a Saucer. I usually prefer a Warper. And the single most important Grey tactic ? The Guardian / Sentry combo has awesome 1 turn firepower. Get 5 Sentries underneath a Guardian and watch them shred anything in sight in a turn. Just be prepared to run after that turn !

To hide or to protect against spikers/goo spitters? I would have thought that because spawn tend to be melee units a guardian would be a waste of time and it would be better to have 3 more sentries or another psyker. NB, I'm not disagreeing, I'm useless with greys, so I want to know more League: Elite, Alliance: The Cursed Clowns, MTL: Exploding Carrots

Posts: 5409 28-Jan-06 10:27 Tori Fan	guardians make good, if expensive, chewtoys... and pack quite a punch if you can get a shot off at attacking mle units. but, mm; keeping those goo-balls from landing where you don't want them is very handy, and it's possible to keep a regen "secret" for quite a while if you knock 50% off the spawn's already bad vision range. mind you, i'm rubbish with greys too so don't listen to me either!

Once the shield is up all spawn vision is halved, and spawn have very poor vision - often your opponent has to guess where you are, and then won't be sure what he'll find when he gets there. secondly the shield generally tends to last a long time - only spikers and splatters do any damage to a shield. You can also bounce spit off the front of the shield - and the spit has to be pinpoint to actually spread far enough under the shield to actually goo anything. The best tactic I find is to stand my sentries on the rim of the shield as the rush comes in, and then warp bomb just in front of it - very deadly. Also standing your sentries on the rim means that you can defend against splatters as well - they tend to blow up just outside the shield. I know this might be weird, but I prefer to be greys if I know I'm likely to face spawn. On the other hand, if I play machina - one of my biggest fears is getting spawn... Old enough to know better. Young enough not to care...

Splatters have excellent blast range which means that if they get even quite close, your Sentries can take quite a hit. The Guardian stops all that. For 20 FP I tend to go with 1to 2 regens 1 guardian, 1psiker, 1 warper, the rest sentries. this does well against spawn, marines and machina. It's not so good against greys with more specialised deployments, especially psiker heavy ones. And just to re-iterate HB, if you suspect you are going to face spawn, a guardian is indispensible. Old enough to know better. Young enough not to care...

Posts: 5451 9-Feb-30 19:38 French? Moi?	I still remind you all that the sentries are the best of the 1fp shooters in regular shootout (when playing original game, not any funky shootout in open). In close up fights, they just tend to lose their best advantage: run when in troubles. That's what makes the sentries so hard to kill. If they have the possibility to scoop, a good player always makes 'em scoop, and in a turn or two, they're back good as new. What this means is that you shouldn't let the greys to run away, so you better concentrate your fire to a single sentry as often as possible to get it down before it gets to recharge, and try to get under their cover for closeup battles. Posts: 1407 28-Jan-06 13:38	A warper is crucial against Spawn IMO, as it's the only unit Greys have that will destroy corpses. The Spawn player may prefer to finish you off quickly, but if it does end up as a drawn-out "match fight" for some reason, corpse clearance will make all the difference.

On a more general note, I think the difficulty that many players have with greys is that they deploy too few sentries - once you start dropping below 6 in a 20 point deployment, your specialists (warper + psiker) end up with 2 little protection. 2 warpers are not necessarily better than 1 sentries do several things to make your warps count... 1) the provide protection for your warper - they prevent the enemy getting too close. 2) they provide intel for your warper 3) They can deny freedom of movement to your opponent making it easier to warp him. 1 warper can be better than 2 especially if the enemy can't get close, you've got good intel on his position,and he has little freedom to move... Old enough to know better. Young enough not to care...

Posts: 987 28-Jan-06 16:57	It's tactics rather than strategy, but I don't think the Greys' "run away" trick has been mentioned. Give a Sentry at least 10 seconds of direct fire or opportunity fire orders and then follow these with a move order back to the Regen or a safe place. If he gets hit and loses his energy, all the fire orders which he can no longer carry out will get cancelled, and he will immediately run for it instead of standing there taking more fire. If he's firing out of a window, make sure the "run away" moves go sideways first, before going backwards, so that he's no longer visible through the window. Also works with Saucers. Doesn't work if set to "halt on sighting" because then all the orders get cancelled if he sees a new enemy. Makes Sentries at least 50% more powerful!

Posts: 3451 28-Jan-06 17:08 BeltBoy	Yes. It's a fantastic tactic. However your opponent can use it to his advantage. Obviously the Sentry won't even see anyone attack from behind or at 90 degrees. And you can sometimes make the Sentry fire at the wrong person. Give him a target way in the distance where you think the Sentry is aiming at. The Sentry won't come close to hitting your unit as his accuracy is too low and he'll ignore the closer and more dangerous unit.

If so, then you can stack up some red lines at visible targets, then stack up some yellows in case those run away, and he'll still run away if he runs out of energy. It sounds like I've been undervaluing those Sentries. Back to the metaphorical drawing board.

One of my most exciting games to date. lsn.kicks-ass.org/lga/dow...enesis.lsn It sees, after an initial poor start, most of the tactics discussed here - warping bodies, warping in front of guardian shields, guardians as chewtoys. I had a funny feeling that the opponent, Bashemall, would go spawn and deployed with that in mind. Think 4 regens are excessive? I don't know but every time they go up they usually kill the spawn unit involved, wipe out the bodies of my men who didn't get out quick enough, and as you will see, it gave me great flexibilty and maneouverabilty. I think I've only lost with it once when I got surprised by a Spawn first turn rush. If I could have taken back the first turn I'd be pretty confident I would have won that one as well...

The basic plan is for the Saucers to go out individually and hit things and then the Sentries to willingly lay down their lives to slow-up the enemy counterattack while the Saucers recharge. You have to hope you're not facing Spawn...
