Aftermath or UFO: Extraterrestrial? |

I've been looking at alternatives to UFO that are out today.
I discounted Afterlight as it looks too much like manga graphics, and Project Xeno is still in dev. Aftermath or UFO: Extraterrestrial (with the new patches); which one is the best of the rest? |

I prefer way more Aftermath then UFO:Extra - To much things is creepy done. I heard that with mods game is better but I didn't try them....

Aftermath is 1/4 cheaper than UFO ET, but this new UFO mod for it might swing me to get the latter.
Aftermath does have true 3D, but as we know, it not a neccessity that promises a great game, it had to be the AI for me. |

Well AI in Aftermath is not high (the problem are weapons of aliens) but I think it's more then in UFO:ET - in this aliens often move in group so splash
damage says 'hallo'. But the most horrible was shooting - its so badly done that even in close range there is probably not more then 50% chance of
hitting... (in "clean" version of UFO:ET)
btw. Redeem you know that Aftermath is in real-time? And its not a great game but I really liked it for story and some surprises.

I really wouldn't rule out Afterlight just because of how it looks. There's no one who hates manga style graphics more than me, but on giving
Afterlight a go after completing Aftershock I was pleasantly surprised with how Afterlight's graphics and quirky atmosphere grew on me. On further
reflection it is not so different in 'style' to the original X-Com game in that the graphics are slightly cartoonish, but done in such a subtle way
that it somehow works really well.
Afterlight really is a fantastic game which for the first time from an X-Com clone brings in some new and original elements of it's own which breathes new life into the concept while sticking closely enough to it's roots for the traditionalist. I believe you can also now download a version of Aftershock which isn't plagued with the dreaded Starforce protection if you really do want a game which graphically looks darker and more urban. Having played them all, in my opinion both Afterlight and Aftershock are far superior to Aftermath and Extraterrestrials - but I guess it depends on exactly what you are wanting from a game. |
