i think you are misunderstanding the way the clock works. each time clock runs seperately from each other, your clock is only running while the server is waiting for your turn.

If your game status says WAITING your clock is not running, but your opponents is.
If game status says PLAY TURN your time clock is running, your opponents game status may also be PLAY TURN, as the server may be waiting for both players to submit a turn, and therefore his clock is also running.

if a person times out they lose the game. so keep your game status on WAITING and your clock will not be running, but your opponents will be (you do not know how long he has left, though you can roughly guess)
